Matiere Premiere Encens Suave

A perfume built to smell like the flower itself, from a house that puts the perfumer's name on the bottle. Carnal Flower is the fragrance many people mean when they say they want a real tuberose. It was created by Dominique Ropion for Éditions de Parfums Frédéric Malle and released in 2005, and it has become one of the house's best-known names. This guide covers what Carnal Flower smells like, why it's considered a landmark, and how the house's approach shapes it. For the house's story, see our Frédéric Malle guide. Check the collection page for current availability, and confirm pricing and notes on the product page rather than treating anything here as fixed. The Idea Behind Éditions de Parfums Frédéric Malle founded Éditions de Parfums in 2000, and his first boutique opened at 37 rue de Grenelle in Paris that year. He is the grandson of the founder of Parfums Christian Dior and the nephew of the filmmaker Louis Malle. Rather than creating the fragrances himself, he works as an editor, putting the perfumer in the spotlight. Bois de Jasmin notes that every bottle is prominently labeled with the name of the perfumer responsible, which it calls "auteur perfumery," and that there are few limits on the price of materials or the theme of the perfumes. Carnal Flower is a good illustration. Malle has said that he and Ropion had talked for years about creating a perfume incredibly true to tuberose flowers, and he describes Ropion as one of the world's greatest connoisseurs of flower evaporation. It was Ropion's third creation for the house, according to Osmoz. What It Smells Like? The house describes Carnal Flower with water fruits such as melon, vegetal notes and fresh tuberose on top, and milky tuberose and musk underneath. Retailers and reviewers list a longer set: bergamot, melon and eucalyptus or camphor on top; tuberose, jasmine, ylang-ylang, orange blossom and coconut in the heart; and white musk below. Now Smell This described the opening in 2006 as heavy green notes, like crushed stems and leaves over mild citrus, with the green notes fading into a soft camphor that warms the heady floral without drawing attention to itself. That camphor-and-green start is what separates Carnal Flower from a more traditional, heady tuberose. A Parfumo reviewer lists tuberose, jasmine, eucalyptus, coconut and melon, and says the melon smells realistic for the first hour, with a little musk after a couple of hours. Retailers list it as an eau de parfum and as unisex. The Numbers Behind the Reputation Concentration of tuberose. The house says Carnal Flower contains by far the highest concentration of natural tuberose in the perfume industry. That's the brand's claim, and we haven't independently verified it. Development time. Malle's own site says it took Ropion 18 months, calling the result an "olfactive Everest." Now Smell This reported in 2006 that he spent more than two years, so accounts differ. User ratings. On Parfumo, users rate its scent around 8.1 out of 10, longevity around 8.6, sillage around 8.2, and value for money around 6.3. Those are opinions, but they suggest owners love how it performs and are more divided on price. Is It for You? Carnal Flower suits you if you like white florals and want one that smells like a living flower rather than a perfume accord. A Bois de Jasmin review at the time of release rated it five stars, "outstanding/potential classic." A Parfumo user wrote that it changed how they think about the note entirely. Tastes differ, though. One blogger found the camphor character less distinctive than a competing tuberose by Serge Lutens, and another reviewer noted that with a small sample they had trouble picking out the notes. If tuberose isn't a note you enjoy, or you prefer something sweeter, it may not be your best starting point at Frédéric Malle. Try before you commit: Tuberose is polarizing, and Carnal Flower's green-camphor opening is unusual. Esscentum has Discovery sets, so check whether it's offered in a smaller size. Where It Fits in the Range? Esscentum lists 14 Frédéric Malle fragrances alongside a hair mist and two linen sprays. Carnal Flower sits alongside Portrait of a Lady, also by Ropion, which retailers describe as a rich, spiced rose. If you want a floral with some weight and spice, that's the comparison. If you prefer something citrus-led, Cologne Bigarade is the lighter option. Our best-of list compares them. Frequently Asked Questions Who created Carnal Flower? Tiziana Terenzi's Anniversary Collection is the house's way of marking its milestones. Here is what it is and how the three releases we list differ. Tiziana Terenzi's best-known line is its star-themed releases, but the house also makes a smaller set of perfumes under the Anniversary Collection name. The labels on product pages don't explain what it means, and the three fragrances in it don't resemble one another. This guide covers what the collection is and helps you choose between its releases. For the house's story, see our Tiziana Terenzi guide. Check the collection page for current availability, and confirm pricing and notes on each product page rather than treating anything here as fixed. What the Anniversary Collection Is? ParfumDreams describes the Anniversary Collection as an olfactory journey through the history of Italian perfumery that celebrates significant moments for the brand since its foundation. The perfumes are sold as extrait de parfum, the most concentrated format. One US retailer says Casanova is produced in a small batch every year, handcrafted from rare raw materials, with each bottle marked with its year of production like a vintage wine. That's the retailer's account, so check the product page for the details of the bottle you're buying. The collection is larger than the three Esscentum lists, so look at the collection page for what's currently available. The Three at a Glance Fragrance What retailers list Mood Casanova Cardamom, guaiac wood, leather, myrrh, pepper and vanilla; a base of amber, ambroxan, cedar, guaiac wood, musk, oakmoss, tonka bean and vetiver Spiced, leathery and amber Bigia Passion fruit, red fruit and saffron on top; magnolia, orchid and rose absolute in the heart; agarwood, amber, musk, oud and sand below Fruity, floral and oud Vittoriale Described as leathery and as expressing depth and strength of character; we couldn't source a note list Leathery A Closer Look Casanova ParfumDreams says Casanova is named after the Venetian writer who became famous almost worldwide for his erotic adventures. ScentVerdict dates it to 2014 and credits Paolo Terenzi. Opinions on how it wears vary. A Parfumo reviewer describes a fresh, citrus-and-floral opening that turns powdery, creamy and clean, close to the skin, and rates it 7.4 out of 10 across 108 ratings. ScentVerdict calls it a powdery amber powerhouse with potent sillage and longevity that polarises. Those two descriptions don't match, which is a good reason to sample it first. Bigia This is the fruitiest of the three. Retailers list passion fruit, red fruit and saffron on top, a heart of magnolia, orchid and rose absolute, and a base of agarwood, amber, musk, oud and sand. ParfumDreams classes it as floral and mossy. One UK retailer lists Bigia as an eau de parfum instead of an extrait, so confirm the concentration on the product page. Vittoriale ParfumDreams describes Vittoriale as an expression of depth and strength of character and files it under leathery fragrances. We couldn't find a verified note list, so read the product page before buying. Which One to Choose You like warm, spiced and amber: Casanova. You like fruity-floral with oud: Bigia. You like leather: Vittoriale, once you've read its notes. You want a gift with a story: Casanova's Venetian namesake and the retailer's description of year-marked bottles give it the most to talk about. Try before you commit: Extraits are strong, and the reviews of Casanova disagree about how it wears. Esscentum has Discovery sets, so check whether the fragrance you want is offered that way. Frequently Asked Questions What is the Tiziana Terenzi Anniversary Collection? It's a collection of extrait de parfum releases that ParfumDreams describes as a journey through the history of Italian perfumery, celebrating significant moments for the brand. Is Casanova a limited edition? One US retailer says it's produced in a small batch every year, with each bottle marked with its production year. Check the product page for the details of the bottle you're buying. Are these extrait or eau de parfum? ParfumDreams lists them as extrait de parfum, though at least one retailer lists Bigia as an eau de parfum. Confirm on the product page. Where can I buy Tiziana Terenzi in Lebanon? It's available online through Esscentum's dedicated collection. Always verify current stock and pricing on the product page before ordering. It was the house's first fragrance, it remains its most discussed, and it comes in more versions than most shoppers realize. Aqua Universalis is the fragrance most people mean when they say they want something "clean" from Maison Francis Kurkdjian. It launched in 2009, the year the house was born, and it still defines the Aqua family. But the name now covers more than one product, and the differences matter before you order. This guide explains what Aqua Universalis is, what it smells like, and how its versions compare. For the house's background, see our Maison Francis Kurkdjian guide. Check the collection page for what's currently available, and confirm pricing and notes on each product page rather than treating anything here as fixed. The Idea Behind It Francis Kurkdjian has said he created the Aqua collection to reinterpret and modernise the eau de Cologne while naturally magnifying its signature. Aqua Universalis was the first of the collection, captured in his words as the sensation of a crystal-clear, luminous freshness. In interviews about the later Cologne Forte range, he traces the idea back to this fragrance, launched when the house was founded in 2009. The house is the creation of Kurkdjian and Marc Chaya, and Aqua Universalis is the scent that set its tone. How It Smells? Retailers consistently describe Aqua Universalis as a musky citrus: bergamot and lemon on top, white flowers such as lily of the valley and mock orange, and a soft base of musk. One retailer compares it to a perfectly cut white blouse, clean and timeless. It's marketed as unisex. The brand's own name for the original is eau de toilette, which is a lighter concentration than eau de parfum, and that shows in the style: it's about transparency rather than weight. Why It's Called a Signature It's the house's origin point. It launched with the house in 2009 and anchors the Aqua family. It has an award. Wikipedia records that it won Cosmétique Magazine's best niche unisex perfume award in 2010. It sells as a line. One retail review calls the Aqua range the house's best-selling unisex line, which is a retailer's observation, not Lebanese sales data. It's easy to wear. Its clean, citrus-and-musk character suits a wide range of occasions, which is a common reason people choose it as their first niche purchase. The Versions, Explained This is where shoppers get confused. A Basenotes thread asks how to choose between the eau de toilette, the Forte and the Cologne Forte, which says a lot. Here is how the listings are laid out. Version What to know Aqua Universalis (2009) The original eau de toilette. Retailers list bergamot, lemon, lily of the valley, mock orange and musk. One comparison site estimates short wear, so it's a light, close-to-skin scent. Aqua Universalis Forte (2011) An eau de parfum variation launched in 2011, according to Now Smell This. This is a separate, earlier product from the one below, and it is not currently listed at Esscentum. Aqua Universalis Cologne Forte (2021) An eau de parfum from the Cologne Forte collection. Kurkdjian describes the range as modern, long-lasting colognes. Nordstrom and Les Senteurs list Italian bergamot, Bulgarian rose, a white floral accord of mock orange and sweet pea, and white musk. Esscentum lists the original and the Cologne Forte. If you're comparing, check the product pages for the concentration and notes, since sites that list "Forte" and "Cologne Forte" often mix them up. Which Should You Choose? The original: if you want the lightest, brightest version and don't mind reapplying. Cologne Forte: if you like the idea of Aqua Universalis but want a longer-lasting eau de parfum with a hint of rose. Neither feels right? The same Aqua family includes Aqua Vitae, which Esscentum also lists in both versions. A retailer lists the Cologne Forte version with Italian bergamot and mandarin, a solar floral accord and a musky base. Try before you commit: Because the versions are subtle, a small size is a good way to choose. Esscentum has Discovery sets, so check whether the one you want is offered that way. Frequently Asked Questions When did Aqua Universalis launch? In 2009, the year Maison Francis Kurkdjian was founded. It was the first fragrance in the Aqua collection. Is Aqua Universalis unisex? Yes, retailers list it as unisex, and the house markets the Aqua range as universal. What is the difference between Aqua Universalis and Cologne Forte? The original is an eau de toilette. Cologne Forte is an eau de parfum from the 2021 collection, which Kurkdjian describes as modern and long-lasting, and it lists rose alongside the white florals. Where can I buy Maison Francis Kurkdjian in Lebanon? It's available online through Esscentum's dedicated collection. Always verify current stock and pricing on the product page before ordering. Amouage has been making perfume since 1983, and its range now spans heritage classics, modern frankincense scents and a new aged collection. Here is how the pieces fit together. Amouage doesn't make it easy to browse. Its catalog mixes fragrances from the 1980s onward with newer releases that have very different identities, and the names rarely hint at what's inside. This guide sorts the Amouage fragrances Esscentum lists into three groups so you can see how they relate. For the house's story, see our Amouage guide. Check the collection page for what's currently available, and confirm pricing and notes on each product page rather than treating anything here as fixed. Group One: The Heritage Gold is where Amouage began. The house was founded in Oman in 1983, and Gold was its first fragrance, created by Guy Robert. It's the natural reference point for everything else. Esscentum's listing doesn't say whether it's the men's or women's version, so check the product page. Group Two: The Modern Frankincense Releases This group covers Decision, Purpose and Lineage, along with Sunshine. Decision is listed by one decant retailer as a 2025 launch by perfumer Quentin Bisch, with bergamot, cardamom and pink pepper on top, frankincense, juniper and myrrh in the heart, and vanilla, cedarwood and patchouli underneath. Reviewers on Parfumo call it versatile. Purpose dates to 2023 according to Basenotes, and reviewers describe it as one of Amouage's most incense-heavy, even "churchy," releases and the most polarizing of its group. Check whether the listing is the standard version or the stronger Purpose 50. Lineage also dates to 2023 per Basenotes. A Parfumo reviewer notes that the opening of Reasons overlaps with Lineage, with spice set against green, vegetal notes, which gives a clue to its character. We haven't sourced a full note list for it. Sunshine is listed without a Man or Woman designation, so check which version it is. We haven't sourced its notes. Group Three: The Essences The Essences is Amouage's newest collection, built around the idea of time. The first trilogy, Lustre, Outlands and Reasons, launched in October 2024 in a refillable bottle that Amouage called its first new bottle design in 15 years. A second trilogy followed in January 2026: Line 618, Remain and Sequence. Esscentum lists four of the six: Lustre, Reasons, Line 618 and Remain. Retailer listings quoting Amouage say the Essences are aged for six months and contain 30% pure perfume, and Harper's Bazaar Arabia describes the six months of ageing and a double infusion. Those are brand claims relayed by retailers and press. Fragrance What we found Lustre By perfumers Julien Rasquinet and Paul Guerlain. The brand's sampler lists cardamom and orris on top, with patchouli, sandalwood and cedarwood in the heart. Reasons By Bertrand Duchaufour. The brand's sampler lists cardamom, hazelnut, cinnamon and schinus molle on top; patchouli, pine, amber, cypriol and davana in the heart; and benzoin, cistus, sandalwood, cedarwood, vetiver, myrrh, oakmoss, musks and palo santo underneath. Line 618 By Nathalie Lorson, named after the numbers of the Golden Ratio. Retailers list pineapple, plum and frankincense on top, heliotrope and pine in the heart, and sandalwood and leather underneath; Now Smell This also mentions black pepper and coconut milk. Remain By Pierre Negrin, described as a homage to a single point. We haven't sourced its notes. Not every reviewer is convinced. A Parfumo reviewer says Reasons borrows heavily from Amouage's existing catalog and brings nothing new, while a Basenotes reviewer finds Reasons very similar to Lustre. Those are individual opinions, but they suggest it's worth sampling before buying more than one. Beyond Perfume Guidance and Love Delight appear at Esscentum as hair perfumes, body lotions and shower gels rather than as perfumes, which makes them a lower-commitment way into the house. Choosing Between Them You want the origin story: Gold. You want a modern, versatile frankincense: Decision. You love incense and can sample first: Purpose. You want the newest, aged releases: the Essences, starting with Lustre or Line 618. You want something gentler to gift: a Guidance or Love Delight hair perfume or body product. Try before you commit: Amouage itself sells an Essences sampler coffret. Esscentum has Discovery sets, so check whether the fragrance you want is offered that way. Frequently Asked Questions What is the Amouage Essences collection? It's Amouage's newest line, in a refillable bottle, with each fragrance aged for six months and described as containing 30% pure perfume. Lustre, Outlands and Reasons came first, followed by Line 618, Remain and Sequence. What is Amouage Decision? One decant retailer lists it as a 2025 launch with bergamot, cardamom, frankincense and vanilla in its notes. Reviewers describe it as versatile. Which Amouage should I try first? Gold for the heritage, Decision for a modern, versatile option, and Purpose only if you love incense and can sample first. Where can I buy Amouage in Lebanon? Amouage is available online through Esscentum's dedicated collection. Always verify current stock and pricing on the product page before ordering. One note, many destinations. Cuirs Nomades is Memo Paris's collection of leather perfumes, and each one smells like a different place. Leather is one of the hardest notes to choose blind. It can be soft, smoky, green, floral or sweet, and the word on the label tells you almost nothing. Memo Paris's Cuirs Nomades collection makes the point on purpose. Each fragrance is named for a country, and each interprets leather differently. This guide walks through the ones Esscentum lists, so you can match one to your taste. Check the Memo Paris collection page for what's currently available, and confirm pricing and notes on each product page rather than treating anything here as fixed. For the house's background, see our Memo Paris guide. The Idea Behind the Collection Memo Paris, founded in 2007 by Clara and John Molloy, builds perfumes around journeys. Retailers quoting the brand describe Cuirs Nomades as a collection for adventurous people, where leather is the essence of any journey, a nod to the traditionality and quality of good leather luggage. Another describes it as celebrating places that come into contact with leather, with each leather shaped by the landscape it comes from. The collection began with Irish, Italian and French Leather. African Leather joined in 2015 (created by perfumer Aliénor Massenet, according to Now Smell This), and Indian Leather launched in 2024. The Collection at a Glance Fragrance What retailers list Mood Irish Leather Juniper, green mate absolute and a leather accord Green and fresh Italian Leather Green tomato leaf, vanilla absolute and a leather accord Green, creamy and soft French Leather Lime, rose water essence and a suede accord Light, floral and Parisian Moroccan Leather Mandarin, ginger and cypress oils, ylang-ylang, iris butter and orange blossom; vetiver, amber and galbanum; leather accord, benzoin, tonka and musk Bright, floral and warm Indian Leather Cypriol heart, oud essence and a leather accord, with olibanum and styrax resins, rose, jasmine, vanilla and patchouli Smoky, resinous and deep African Leather (hair perfume only here) Cardamom, geranium and a leather accord, with bergamot, saffron, cumin, patchouli, an oud accord, vetiver and musk Spiced and floral A Closer Look Irish Leather and Italian Leather: the green ones These two lead with fresh, green notes. Irish Leather pairs juniper and green mate with the leather accord, while Italian Leather pairs green tomato leaf with vanilla. A forum poster on Basenotes feels Irish Leather isn't especially leathery, which is worth knowing if you want a strong hide-and-saddle character. They're the softest route into the collection. French Leather: light and floral Memo's own site labels French Leather "iconic," and Galeries Lafayette describes it as a Parisian vision of leather with a luminous rose. Retailers list lime, rose water essence and a suede accord. If you want leather that doesn't read as heavy, start here. It's also available as a hair perfume. Moroccan Leather: bright and floral One retailer describes Moroccan Leather as a leather scent that is also fresh and floral, thanks to ylang-ylang, mandarin and orange blossom, with tonka and musk below. The same retailer says it won Best Fragrance from an Independent Niche Brand at the 2019 Fifi Awards, which we haven't independently verified. Indian Leather: the deepest This is the newest and the most intense of the group. Retailers and press describe a cypriol heart, a plant with a smoky, woody note found along Indian rivers, with oud essence and a leather accord, plus olibanum and styrax resins, rose and jasmine absolutes, vanilla and patchouli. One retailer credits perfumer Juliette Karagueuzoglou. The bottle pays tribute to the elephant. If you like oud and resins, this is the one to try. African Leather: spiced, but hair perfume only Now Smell This described African Leather in 2015 as a spicy floral leather with cardamom, geranium and leather, plus saffron, cumin, patchouli, an oud accord, vetiver and musk. At Esscentum it's currently listed only as a hair perfume, a lighter format designed for hair, rather than the standard eau de parfum. Try before you commit: Because each leather is so different, a small size is a sensible first step. Esscentum has Discovery sets, so check whether the fragrance you want is offered that way. Choosing by Taste Fresh and easy: Irish Leather or Italian Leather. Light and elegant: French Leather. Bright with some warmth: Moroccan Leather. Dark, smoky and resinous: Indian Leather. Hair only: African, French and Irish Leather are listed as hair perfumes. Frequently Asked Questions What is Memo Paris Cuirs Nomades? It's Memo Paris's collection of leather perfumes, each named for a country and interpreting leather differently. The name means "nomadic leathers." Which Cuirs Nomades should I try first? French Leather, Irish Leather and Italian Leather are the lighter, easier entries. Indian Leather is the deepest, so start there only if you know you like oud and resins. Are the Cuirs Nomades perfumes unisex? Retailers list African Leather and Indian Leather as unisex, and the collection as a whole isn't split by gender. Choose by scent profile. Where can I buy Memo Paris in Lebanon? Memo Paris is available online through Esscentum's dedicated collection. Always verify current stock and pricing on the product page before ordering. Six fragrances share the Sapphire name. Here is what separates them and how to choose. Boadicea the Victorious is best known for its Sapphire collection, and Blue Sapphire is the name most shoppers arrive with. But "Sapphire" covers six releases that smell quite different from one another, and some searches lump them together. This guide explains the family, so you can tell which one fits you before you buy. For the house's wider story, see our Boadicea the Victorious guide. Check the collection page for current availability, and confirm pricing and notes on each product page rather than treating anything here as fixed. What the Sapphire Collection Is The brand describes the Sapphire perfumes as a showcase that reflects its respect for monarchy, thrones, power, sovereigns and queens, and calls the collection a set of its "most stunning jewels." On its own site it lists the collection as Blue, Oud, Green, Aqua, Supercharged Blue and Tobacco Sapphire. Basenotes dates Blue Sapphire to 2013, Green Sapphire to 2016 and Oud Sapphire to 2023, so the collection has grown over time rather than launching at once. Retailers list several of these as eau de parfum, and the house describes its fragrances as unisex. The Six at a Glance Fragrance What retailers and the brand list Mood Blue Sapphire (2013) Lemon, sage, saffron, marigold and orange on top; cardamom, magnolia, rose and jasmine in the heart; amber, oud, patchouli and vetiver below The signature: bright, spiced, then resinous Blue Sapphire Supercharged One retailer lists orange, aldehydes and lemon; rose, cardamom, raspberry and jasmine; oud, amber, patchouli and leather A more intense take on Blue Oud Sapphire (2023) Ambrette, saffron and black pepper on top; leather, oud and osmanthus in the heart; orris, sandalwood and styrax below Leathery, oud-led Aqua Sapphire Pineapple, rum, davana and saffron on top; musk, may rose and saffron in the heart; moss, sandalwood, vanilla, cypriol and amber below Fruity, boozy and sweet Tobacco Sapphire The brand describes tobacco with golden caramel facets, honeyed hay, benzoin, cedar, sandal and guaiac woods, patchouli and musks, with magnolia, heliotrope and rose; a retailer adds mandarin, saffron, cumin, coriander, pink pepper and incense on top Resinous, tobacco and caramel Green Sapphire (2016) We couldn't source reliable notes Check the product page Choosing Between Them If you want the one everyone talks about Start with Blue Sapphire. It's the collection's best-known release, and its spiced citrus opening, floral heart and oud-and-amber base make it a good reference point for everything else. If you like it and want more intensity, Blue Sapphire Supercharged is the version to look at, though check the product page for how the two differ. If oud is your priority Oud Sapphire is the most oud-led of the six, with leather, osmanthus and styrax around the oud. It's the natural pick if you already know you like oud and want it with spice and leather rather than fruit. If you want something sweet and unusual Aqua Sapphire is the odd one out, with pineapple and rum on top and vanilla and amber underneath. Basenotes lists no reviews of it, so you'll be relying on the notes. If you like boozy, fruity fragrances, it's worth sampling. If you like tobacco Tobacco Sapphire is the warmest of the group. The brand's own description is the most detailed of any here, with golden caramel facets, honeyed hay and a whisper of singed paper, tempered by magnolia, heliotrope and rose. A retailer lists it as unisex. If you're drawn to Green Sapphire We couldn't source its notes, so read the product page before deciding. Try before you commit: The brand and several retailers sell sample or 10 ml sets of the Sapphire fragrances, and Esscentum has Discovery sets, so check whether the one you want is offered that way. A small size is a sensible way to choose between six releases. Practical Things to Know Concentration. Selfridges lists Blue Sapphire Supercharged, Aqua Sapphire and Green Sapphire as eau de parfum. Confirm the format on each product page. Similar names. Blue Sapphire and Blue Sapphire Supercharged are separate listings, so check which one you're ordering. Unisex positioning. The house markets its fragrances as gender-neutral. Choose by profile rather than label. Frequently Asked Questions What is the Boadicea the Victorious Sapphire collection? It's the house's best-known group of fragrances: Blue, Oud, Green, Aqua, Supercharged Blue and Tobacco Sapphire, themed around monarchy and jewels. Which Sapphire should I try first? Blue Sapphire is the collection's signature and the best starting point. Choose Oud Sapphire if you want oud, or Tobacco Sapphire if you prefer warm and resinous. What is the difference between Blue Sapphire and Supercharged? Supercharged is a more intense take on Blue Sapphire, with a different note list at one retailer.
