Nishane Hundred Silent Ways: A Beginner's Guide
The quietest of Nishane's best-known fragrances, and one of the easiest ways into the Istanbul house.
Nishane is often described in terms of loud, resinous extraits. Hundred Silent Ways is the exception. It's a creamy, powdery white floral that's built for the people close to you, not for the people across the room. That makes it a useful place to start if you're new to Nishane, and a good example of the house's range. For the house's story, see our Nishane guide. Check the collection page for current availability, and confirm pricing and notes on each product page rather than treating anything here as fixed.
Where the Name Comes From?
Nishane's copy for the fragrance quotes the poet Rumi: "I closed my mouth and spoke to you in a hundred silent ways." The house describes it as a tribute to the most-liked perfumes in the history of perfumery, in a modern interpretation. Nishane draws on Turkish culture throughout its catalog, and retailers note influences ranging from the city of Troy to Turkish shadow puppetry and the poetry of Rumi. A Venba listing says Hundred Silent Ways was released in 2016, and retailer copy for the X version says the house counts the original among its top five bestsellers globally, which is Nishane's own claim.
What It Smells Like?
Retailers agree on the notes. The top is tuberose, mandarin and peach. The heart is white jasmine, gardenia and orris. The base is vanilla, sandalwood and vetiver. In plain terms, it's a creamy white floral with a powdery, slightly cool heart from the orris, kept from turning heavy by the mandarin and anchored by vanilla and woods. Venba calls it floral-gourmand in feel but far more elegant than that label usually suggests, and says the vetiver and sandalwood stop the sweetness from becoming dessert. It's sold as an extrait de parfum, and Venba says the house doesn't disclose the perfumer.
How It Wears?
One retailer describes it as quiet by design. Venba's assessment is strong longevity of roughly seven to nine hours, with modest projection, close to the skin, and it advises that "extrait" often signals a beast-mode fragrance but this one isn't. Treat that as one retailer's description, since performance varies by person and by skin. The same retailer notes that tuberose and gardenia are polarising, and that the creaminess one wearer calls luxurious, another finds too rich.
Original or X?
Esscentum lists both Hundred Silent Ways and Hundred Silent Ways X, and they are different fragrances.
| Hundred Silent Ways | Hundred Silent Ways X | |
|---|---|---|
| Top | Tuberose, mandarin, peach | Tuberose, mandarin, peach |
| Heart | White jasmine, gardenia, orris | Gardenia, orris, jasmine, heliotrope |
| Base | Vanilla, sandalwood, vetiver | Vanilla, leather, patchouli |
| Character | Creamy, powdery and intimate | The same mood with more edge and presence |
Retailer copy relaying Nishane's description says X keeps the original's cherished mood and adds leathery notes for sophistication, and Venba describes leather and patchouli replacing much of the original's gentleness. X launched in 2023, according to Venba. If you want the creamy, intimate floral that made the name, start with the original. If you want that floral heart with leather and more presence, look at X.
Who It's For?
Nishane lists it as unisex. Venba notes that the tuberose-gardenia heart reads feminine in the classical sense, but that the sandalwood-vetiver base keeps it balanced and it is commonly worn by men. If you like soft, creamy white florals and want something close and elegant rather than loud, it's a strong candidate. If you want a fragrance that fills a room, the house's resinous side may suit you better.
A Starting Point for Turkish Niche Perfumery
Nishane was founded in Istanbul in 2012 by Mert Güzel and Murat Katran and is generally described as the first niche perfumery based in the city. Hundred Silent Ways shows one side of the house, the soft and floral side. Ani, Hacivat and the others show different sides, and our best-of list walks through them.
